2013 – Social Media needs to pay it’s way.
Sunday’s media roundup brought me an interesting article on social Media in 2013 from Forbes:
“5 ways Social media will change the way you work”.
Before you zone out thinking – “oh not another article on how Social Media will replace traditional business” The tag-line isn’t the interesting part. What’s interesting is in the slide show at the bottom. Here are two things that need to be shouted aloud.
Social Media needs to prove it’s ROI
Return on investment, or as I like to think of it – is this technology pulling it’s weight is critical in business. Why has Social Media got away with the “it’s just something we have to do” label for so long?
My moneys on the fact that it’s poorly understood how these technologies can pull their weight
Glad to see that someone at Forbes thinks so too.
Social Media won’t replace your website
My view: It can’t, it shouldn’t and it won’t.
If your Social Media presence is a mere copy of your website it’s missing the point. Websites, blogs, Facebook pages and Twitter accounts all have different purposes.
WordPress, Twitter and Facebook wouldn’t all exist if they didn’t perform separate roles. Threating them all the same and failing to understand the difference means you are missing out on Competitive Advantage.
The upside is there – but you must understand it to make it pay!
