Mapping emails to show communications between countries…

How analysis of who spoke to whom gives us insights into the world today.

Emails graphically illustrated

Researchers from Stanford University,Cornell University,Qatar Comp and Yahoo! Research analysed emails sent between different countries to produce maps showing national, cultural and religious breakdowns. It’s a fine piece of data analysis and shows what is possible, although two things are quite clear.

  1. The data mapped is meta data,
  2. limitations arising from the data and it’s collection mean that no firm results can be inferred.

Two “outline” newspaper pieces cover the story in the Daily Mail and the Washington Post.

Here is a link to the paper:The Mesh of Civilizations and International Email Flows.

It’s not a bad read as scientific papers go but does head into some ideologically contentious territory dealing with Huntingtons theories.
